§ 21.48.070. Shipping containers as storage buildings prohibited.

  • A.

    It is the intent of the city council of the City of Cheney to limit, except in strictly regulated circumstances, the placement and use of any shipping container as an accessory building, storage building or living unit within the city limits. This action is taken to protect the public health and safety and the aesthetic quality of the City of Cheney.

    B.

    No person shall place or cause to be placed or use or permit the use of any shipping container as an accessory building, storage building or living unit within the city limits of the City of Cheney; provided that licensed and bonded contractors may utilize shipping containers for temporary housing of equipment and/or materials during construction as authorized by a city building permit.

    C.

    Portable Shipping "Pods" (portable moving containers for local or long distance moves) for the temporary purpose of storing personal belongings, may be permitted in a driveway (outside the public right-of-way) of the residence relocating, for up to 14 days to facilitate a move. No other shipping containers are permitted in residential zones.
